Cantilena May concert

Cantilena, a women’s chorus based in Arlington, performed "I Will Be Earth: The Poetry of Nature" on. Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington, 630 Mass. Ave.

In a news release, Cantilena says that it invited the community to come explore the natural world and the role that it plays in people's lives as reflected in poetry and song. "This unique program pairs the two art forms by interweaving a selection of readings with choral settings of poems. The guest artist, Arlington Poet Laureate Jean Flanagan, has chosen the works of several local poets to complement Artistic Director Elinor A. Armsby’s musical selection."

The program included songs by Gwyneth Walker, Roger Bourland, Susan LaBarr and Randall Thompson; in coordination with poems such as "Bird" by Francisco X. Alarcón; "This is the Garden" by e. e. cummings; "Cocoons" by Emily Dickinson; "A Girl's Garden" by Robert Frost; "In Autumn" by May Swenson; and "Dew" by Sara Teasdale.

Attendees were able to meet Flanagan and other local poets at a reception that follows the concert.

The concert program booklet was posted in advance at https://www.cantilena.org/concerts.

Tickets were priced at up to $25. For more information, advance ticket sales, Card-to-Culture discounts and online purchasing, one could go to https://www.cantilena.org. Children 12 and under were admitted free with an adult. Tickets were sold at the door 30 minutes prior to the performance.
