UPDATED, Oct. 27: An estimated 500,000 customers — some in Arlington, but many from the South Shore to the tip of the Cape — were without power Wednesday, OIct. 27, after a wicked nor'easter blew through Massachusetts, YourArlington partner Patch reports.

The storm damage forced schools to cancel or delay classes, affected morning commutes and forced a warning to stay off the roads.

More than two dozen communities have at least 80 percent of their power customers without power, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Some towns, like Hingham, Norwell, Abington and even on the North Shore like Hamilton and Essex, are 100 percent in the dark as of 8 a.m. In Plymouth alone, 26,900 customers are experiencing outages.

The National Weather Service is recommending people not travel in Southeastern Massachusetts, where winds have been gusting with hurricane-like strength. In Edgartown, a 94-mile-per-hour gust was recorded.

Forecasters said winds will continue gusting well over 50 mph, even in the Boston area, throughout the morning.

Power lines were strewn across communities south of Boston, but no storm-related injuries have been reported.

Arlington cleans up after storm

Arlington Public Works, Fire, and Police personnel worked into the evening to clean up and keep the Town safe as a Nor'easter hit the region. Public Works continues to clear street trees and damaged limbs and will continue for several days. Priority is given to those downed branches that are public safety issues (walks and roadways). To assist in this clean up, Public Works is asking residents, if they are able, to bag or bundle small branches for regular weekly curbside yard waste collection. For tree or large limb removal from private property, contact a professional tree service.

The National Weather continues its high wind warning into Wednesday afternoon. Please be sure to secure any yard furniture, tools, or other items which may become airborne in high wind. Keep patio umbrellas closed when not in use. Yard-waste collection delays

If your street was missed, report delay to JRM, leave yard waste out for next day pick up.
JRM is reporting delays in yard waste collection due to high volume and other operational delays. Yard waste volumes can be very unpredictable in the fall, so if others on your route have a lot of material out for collection and the truck fills up quickly, they have to dump it before they can continue the route. If that happens towards the end of the day, then the rest of that route will be collected the following day. For public health reasons, trash and recycling collection are prioritized over yard waste.

You may not receive a call back, but your street will be recorded and revisited the following day.

If only your yard waste was missed, please be sure it was prepared correctly:

- Yard waste must be in paper yard waste bags or barrels labeled with a Town “Yard Trimmings" sticker available at Shattucks hardware stores or at DPW, 51 Grove Street, during business hours– no plastic bags.
- Tree branches (maybe we should start calling these "twigs" instead of branches?) must be 3 feet or shorter and under 1 inch thick. Branches may be bundled using decomposable twine. Please don't make them heavy.
- No soil, stumps, or root balls of any size will be collected.
