Mary O'Connor seeks assessor seat
Mary Winstanley O'Connor has announced that she is seeking reelection to the Board of Assessors, a seatr she has held since 2001.
It is my distinct pleasure to continue to serve our community as a member of the Arlington Board of Assessors.
Our three-member board has significant experience and depth -- with William Zagata, a licensed appraiser; Gordon Jamieson, a businessman and community activist; and me, an attorney.
As a board, we are required as a matter of law to assess all real and personal property in our town at full and fair cash value.
To that end, all members of the board have successfully completed courses in assessment administrative law, procedures and valuation required by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Each has an intimate and working knowledge of commercial and residential sales in town.
The board is committed to:
a.) ensuring properties are assessed as required by Massachusetts law; and
b.) working with our fellow residents and taxpayers to ensure transparency, equity and fairness.
The board understands that as real estate values continue to trend upward that this presents a hardship for many of our seniors and disabled veterans, among others, who have lived in town nearly all of their lives, raised families and contributed to making Arlington a wonderful community to live in.
One of the various duties of the board is to consider real estate tax deferrals, abatements and exemptions. For those who need relief and qualify under the statute, the ability to apply for certain tax relief is available. Residents need only call our office or visit the office and our staff would be pleased to assist them.
